NBRC provides respiratory therapists recognition for their hard work and dedication to quality by awarding credentials based on high-competency standards. Forty-nine states regulating the profession recognize our examinations as their standard for state licensure. To ensure the integrity of the respiratory care credentialing system, we hold ourselves to the highest standards. Therefore, all seven of our examinations are accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) and are developed by respiratory care professionals to ensure they’re predictive of job performance. The NCCA is the certification program accreditation body of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (I.C.E.).

All of our examinations are reviewed every five years as part of NCCA’s accreditation renewal process. Working with NCCA demonstrates our full compliance with stringent testing and measurement standards. Their recognition is important to us because it denotes our ongoing efforts to protect the integrity and excellence of our respiratory care exams.

The NCCA’s Standards for the Accreditation of Certification Programs were the first standards developed by the credentialing industry for professional certification programs. There are more than 20 Standards that help ensure the health, welfare and safety of the public remain focal points during test development. All of them highlight the essential elements of a high-quality program.

This year, we are up for re-accreditation of our examinations. To earn or maintain accreditation by the NCCA, we must meet each Standard and provide evidence of compliance by submitting required documentation. Each Standard has related Essential Elements, which specify what certification programs must do to fulfill the requirements of each Standard.

We work hard to maintain our NCCA distinction and are proud of the work we do. We have maintained accreditation continuously since 1977 and were one of the first certifying bodies to ever be accredited. Our accreditation signifies how we continue to truly define excellence in the respiratory care profession.
